Texas SOS Sh*tcanned After Failed Voter Purge, So That’s Sad We Guess (goes to Wonkette)

David Whitley, who had the job less than twelve months, has stepped down. Texas law requires that the Sec’y of State can assume the job immediately after appointment by the governor, but must be confirmed by 2/3 of the state senate by the end of the legislative session. All twelve Democrats voted against him after his failed attempt to purge over 100,000 voters, so he did not meet the requirement. Good-bye and good riddance.

Mount Vernon, Texas Independent School District has hired for a high school football coach a disgraced Baylor coach who was fired for mishandling complaints of sexual assault involving football players.

He is currently in Italy, but will take over next year.

wfaa.com

[Art] Briles led Baylor football for seven years. But after he was fired, one lawsuit alleged that during four of those years, there were 52 acts of rape, five of them gang rapes, involving at least 31 players.

Brenda Tracy is a sexual assault survivor. In 1998 she was gang-raped by four college football players. She says the Briles hire is sending the wrong message.

He’s a Christian though, so all’s good. After all, he’s forgiven. The school board voted 7-0 to hire him.

The school announced Briles’ hire late Friday, just before the holiday weekend, in a press release.

Fancy that. Almost as if they had to hide it in the weekend news dump.

“We are pleased to welcome Coach Briles back home to Texas. He brings with him a wealth of not only football experience but also life experience. He is passionate about investing in the lives of young people and helping them to succeed both on the field and in life. After a thorough due diligence process and several earnest conversations, we believe our students will benefit greatly from his skills and experience,” [school superintendent Jason] McCullough said.

Due diligence. What gang rapes? He’s a winning coach, that’s what matters.

Our election system is wide open to interference, our media are easily tweaked, and our system of education produces voters and consumers who cannot tell the difference between real and fake.

If the surveys were in-depth conversations, many answers might run: “Do I approve? Guess so. He hasn’t made any changes I can see. The market is doing fine.”

“Disapproval” would mush out in much the same way. Blogs, FB, Twitter are not real life samples.

Pelosi knows that unless and until there is overwhelming, bipartisan support for such an effort, it will end with Trump’s acquittal in the Senate. And that would only help him win another four years in office. “He wants to be impeached so he can be exonerated by the Senate,” she told top Democrats in a private meeting. “His actions are villainous to the Constitution of the United States.”

The speaker argues for another course: Continuing congressional oversight and relying on the courts to provide air cover as six different House committees seek documents and testimony from a stonewalling administration. While not as gratifying to those who are eager to begin impeachment proceedings, and who argue that anything less is a dereliction of Congress’s duty to hold Trump accountable, it is the more likely path to defeating him in 2020.

The Democratic caucus would be wise to trust her instincts and experience.

What she needs to do is start encouraing her committees to enforce subpoenas.

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. We had tornado warnings in Northern NJ and Staten Island last night; there are NWS crews out looking at damage and there were several radar identified tornadoes recorded. So, a busy night.

They’re predicting more here today and tonight. Fun times.

But the damage here doesn’t compare to what happened out west with the storms in Kansas and Ohio. And it doesn’t compare to the historic flooding that reports indicate will continue well into the summer.

It’s a good thing the fucking GOP blocked disaster aid (for prior natural disasters), and we’ve got an infrastructure president in the WH who will make stronger building codes a priority. *bitter laugh*

Meanwhile, we’ve got McConnell reminding everyone that Supreme Court Justice Merrick Garland can’t be reached for comment as he indicates that he’ll be more than happy to seat another Trump pick to the Supreme Court before 2020.

Elections have consequences, and everyone who warned people to vote as if their lives depended on it were right - the GOP assault on civil and voting rights, women’s rights, and consumer and environmental protections continues, and McConnell is Ground Zero of the rollback of those rights and protections. It will take decades to undo the damage - because just enough people in just enough places decided that the know-nothing Trump should be in the WH and not the qualified woman.

The Navy is holding back on doing shock tests and are concerned about the readiness of the EMALS launchers - they also are concerned about the ability repair while underway.

Yeah, it’s called teething problems and new systems have that problem. We had it with the F-117. We had it with the F-22 and F-35. We had it with the B-2 (and B-1) and even the B-52s… every new system had limitations and problems.

But these problems get magnified when you’re talking about $12 billion for a single piece of equipment (a ship).

Trump thinks that switching to steam solves the problem.

It doesn’t. The ship was designed around the EMALS system freeing up space to do other things, and if you put steam back on the agenda, then you’ve got to reallocate space, redesign entire spaces, and that adds.. *back of the envelope calculations* - billions to the costs of each of the ships.

Yeah, this is the same Trump that said that he saved money on the AF1 deal (he didn’t) and that our stealth planes are invisible (they aren’t).

Steam catapults pull steam directly from the heating system that propels the ship and powers the generators. When they’re running, it draws significant water from that system, which lowers the pressure for the other parts and requires large desalination units. Most importantly, there is a single layer of metal separating the radiation side of a carriers system from the steam being released into the air.

I also figure the difference between steam catapults and electromagnetic ones would be the same as the difference between gas and electric automobiles. Specifically the starting force/torque is much greater for electromagnetic.

Computers can modulate the torque/force so that the launch is smoother and therefore induces less stress on airframes and the catapult systems itself.

Correct. I was implying that it’s a good thing rather than a bad thing to have more starting torque.

It’s essentially the next tech step towards handling a wider variety of aircraft from a catapult system. There were a lot of teething problems and foot-dragging going from hydraulic catapults to steam back in the 50s.

There were huge issues when they built the first slanted decks too. But the safety from the slanted deck meant that launch and landings could occur simultaneously, instead of having to devote time to one or the other.

Another big issue was placement of the various elevators in the center of the deck (kamikazi attacks could render the deck inoperable if the elevators were hit) before/during WWII. Edge elevators became the norm after WWII because of the hard won lessons.

The Enterprise had huge issues with its radar systems and the size/placement of the bridge also limited operations in some respects. When launched, the Enterprise had 8 nuclear reactors; that’s now reduced to 2 in the Nimitz and Ford class. Lessons learned…

Angled deck was safety in terms of the forward deck park during landing ops (barriers only helped so much) as well as allowing jets the chance to bounce and go around again if there was a last minute wave-off or they did not catch a wire in the arresting system. (My father served on a straight-deck carrier in the mid-50s in a squadron that flew F-2H Banshees.)

They could call him to read chapter and verse… because that reading would be far more newsworthy than Trump tweets and his attempts to obstruct justice by and through Barr.

Mueller can testify as to how he conducted the investigation. He can testify as to the professionalism of those working in the OSC. He can specifically rebut the GOP smear campaign.

The report is the guide Democrats need to impeach Trump. Now they have to do it.

2020 candidates: Booker, Castro, Warren, Harris, O’Rourke, and Moulton all call for impeachment to start. Booker just came out for impeachment after waffling on the issue.

The chorus is turning into a full fledged unified demand to impeach the fucker.

Nancy has to be hearing this, and if she was 3d chessing this situation into getting the support to impeach Trump, it’s worked.

Nadler’s holding a 2pm presser, and the only thing people will want to hear is that Nadler is beginning the process of impeachment, which guarantees that the entire summer will be public hearings highlighting Trump committed federal felonies - and not just obstruction.

We’ll be talking the money laundering and consorting with foreign nationals to undermine US national security all to advance Trump’s personal financial interests.

If Nadler doesn’t announce impeachment will commence, you’ll hear an even bigger cry from rank and file Democrats to take action in light of Mueller’s statement clearly identifying that but for DOJ policy, he would have indicted.

He’s not practicing law. He’s obstructing justice and interfering in ongoing federal investigations on behalf of his boss Trump.

He’s politicizing the DOJ to further Trump’s actions and admin goals of remaining in power to thwart the investigations into Trump’s corrupt and criminal practices.

Nope. That’s not a winning game plan for him. So it can’t be left up to him. If that means he needs to be removed before an election is held, let’s get to work. If it is just as easy to vote him out, and does less damage to the country, there will be plenty of time to serve up some justice when he’s out.

True, true. I am just saying. There needs to be severe punishment for what he’s done and that includes striping his law license and I think a jail term.

This is on the entire Republican party. The GOP members of Congress know the truth and don’t care; they are all owned by Russia (with the exception of Amash) and support
Russian interference because it guarantees their long term survival as the majority party in this country. McConnell made this clear in 2016 when he refused to support Obama’s efforts to reveal the Russian attack. We are under attack by a hostile power and the GOP works for this enemy.

He’s worried about saying something that is not 100% legally accurate. Which is why he sounds like he’s waffling when he says “If we could have cleared the president, we would have.” That’s why we have to be careful of him testifying. He’s going to hand Democrats a block of iron and say “If this were made into handcuffs, you could arrest the president.” Does that mean Democrats should, or not? Reminds me of the Oracle at Delphi whose prophecies were too cryptic to decipher.

Mueller did say there was not sufficient evidence to charge collusion (i.e. not enough evidence to prove beyond a reasonable doubt), but he did not make the same statement concerning obstruction. So he does believe there is sufficient evidence to prove those charges beyond a reasonable doubt.

Mueller’s praise of those who worked with him was a powerful refutation of Trump and Barr’s outrageous attacks against the investigators. Mueller has to come to the realization that the old rules of decorum no longer apply; when an autocratic wannabe is President of the United States, one needs to be blunt and unambiguous in their assertions of truth. Being too coy has never been successful in our nation: we are not philosophers accustomed to reading Hegel. One of the main lessons taught in writing essays in English is that clear and simple language is the most effective medium for conveying information. Mueller needs to learn that lesson.

Could well be - if there’s truly damning evidence of major felonies Trump’s committed, than some of the fence-sitters may finally start to say, “Enough”. Rep. Amash has said more than once that behind closed doors, GOP members have told him that Trump’s deserving of impeachment, and while I certainly wouldn’t agree with Amash politically, I see no real reason to doubt him on that.

Exposing Trump’s financial shenanigans would give the GOP cover to start openly saying Trump’s gotta go ASAP.

We already have evidence of financial crimes.

We have the Trump foundation shut down over financial chicanery and failing to follow state law.

We have the Trump golf resorts hiring undocumented persons in a systemic fashion.

We have Trump named as an unindicted coconspirator on money laundering in the Cohen case.

SDNY and EDNY and EDVA are still looking at Trump’s financial crimes.

NYS is still looking at Trump’s financial activities and could pursue tax fraud charges (civil and criminal).

I personally believe the latter and have seen nothing to really change that conclusion. We certainly have plenty of excuses for why we can’t impeach him, but all of them seem to boil down to the same mistaken belief: That impeaching Bill Clinton actually benefited him and thus doing so to Donald Trump would lead to the same result.

I think what they’d need is clear and unambiguous evidence of money laundering, and by that, we’re talking Pablo Escobar levels of money laundering (which I’m pretty sure Trump’s been up to for a long time).

It’s gotta be something simple and clear - something that even a total red-hat sportin’ lunkhead can understand is obviously and glaringly illegal.

I am leaning towards the latter. But it’s not the rank and file Democrats. It’s a Leadership problem and @SpeakerPelosi needs to open IMPEACHMENT proceedings/hearings. Lets get everything out there. If in the end, there is enough (and there will be) evidence, then move for a vote to impeach.

Remember, during Watergate the Republicans didn’t support impeachment either. But as more and more dirt came to light, even they had to finally admit Nixon had to go.

Not much. His personal approval numbers took a dive and never really recovered, but his job approval numbers remained fairly consistent throughout the impeachment process. He benefited strongly from having overseen an economic recovery, getting the actual credit for such unlike Trump whose numbers continue to drag the ocean floor because even on his best day he can barely crack 50% on polls asking if he deserves credit for the economy.

He must be removed from office. If the GOP doesn’t comply, they’re complicit.

and that was the ultimate goal of the Mueller Report and the other investigations related or parallel to it: to force the GOP to either act or be complicit in his crimes.

there is still a good chance they will choose the latter course

re: #325 Eclectic Cyborg

The GOP are ALREADY complicit.

And using that in 2019 and 2020 elections to remind voters that every vote for a GOPer is a vote to enable Trump crimes.

That’s where it has to start. That’s where people will notice.

There are elections this year. There are state elections. The GOP needs to be held accountable at all levels of govt for their actions re: Trump. They back him? Then roll out the ads showing that their actions enable corruption and criminality. Make it personal and explicit. Don’t hold back on what Trump and the GOP are doing.

Remind them that Trump is rolling back civil and voting rights.

Remind them that Trump is rolling back consumer and environmental protection.

The GOP is cheering all this on. That means the GOP are the ones who support depriving people of their rights and access to clean water/air. The GOP are the ones who continue to seek to deprive people of their access to health coverage too.

Hold the GOP accountable for all that.

And impeach Trump. Hold Barr and the rest of those who defy the subpoenas in contempt and fine them to the maximum extent under the law.

Pelosi and Congressional Democrats need to treat this as the existential threat that it is. They have tools at their disposal. Use all of them.

It’s unprecedented that the GOP and the WH are this thoroughly compromised, complicit, and criminally engaged in a coverup. That means you need to use an unprecedented amount of power and tools at your disposal to untangle the mess and hold all those responsible accountable for their criminal conduct.

And if that includes members of Congress, then do that as well.

Good evening and we’re now at T minus 20 minutes, give or take, to utter political insanity in Israel.

For those not up to speed, after multiple delays and attempts, PM-elect Netanyahu has - with less than an hour to a final midnight deadline - completely failed to assemble a coalition to form a new government.

The reason? Internal bickering among his political allies has resulted in chaos - incoming PMs need at minimum 61 out of 120 total Knesset representatives from all parties to support the new government. As it stands, Bibi under 60 due to a confrontation between the Ultra-Orthodox parties and the Secular-Right-Wing party Yisrael Beitenu - he needs both and they won’t sit with one another at this time.

At midnight, he can’t continue and the Israeli President will have no choice but to task another with forming a government instead. To avoid this, the Likud has tabled a no-confidence vote at 23:30. If it passes, then the parliament is considered “scattered” and new elections will be underway, just two months after the previous elections.

There’s been endless debates, deals and betrayals that would keep your average TV show with enough material for about 5 seasons - and all of it in the past 24 hours.

“…Mueller’s nine-and-half-minute-long statement likely had a different, possibly greater, impact than the release of that report. Here was a credible source telling the story, even if only in an abbreviated manner. This illustrated what House Democrats need to do, whether or not they proceed with impeachment: Bring witnesses to public hearings to convey the full narrative of the Russiagate. House committees are tussling with the Trump administration over potential witnesses, such as former White House counsel Don McGahn, but there are others the Democrats could showcase. (How about former Trump business associate Felix Sater, who negotiated the Trump project in Moscow?) The Dems ought to move past the procedural squabbling and present a clear depiction of Trump’s misconduct in this matter—and others.

Mueller did not advocate any course of action. His job is done, his mission accomplished. He announced his resignation and passed the case for obstruction to Congress. But he has told a slice of the story—a slice that is damning for Trump. It fixes a spotlight on the momentous lies Trump and his crew have told, lies that aided Putin’s war on American democracy, and lies that continue to flow from Trump and his henchmen. Mueller has served the truth. In doing so, he has indicted Trump—not in a legal sense, but for betraying his country.”

I often wonder if Al Gore was elected and 9/11 still occurs if the GOP to this day would be campaigning on “9/11 is what happens when you elect Democrats”.

If Al Gore was elected, his national security team would have paid attention when Richard Clarke and John O’Neill tried to raise the alarms. Or when the Minneapolis SAC had a flight student in custody but didn’t want to get a warrant to look in his laptop, or when other FBI field offices had flight schools reporting suspicious students.

They’d have done something about it. Photos would have been distributed, and at least some of the terrorists would have been caught before getting on the planes.

With 2 minutes to the start of the vote, a last minute deal for getting the Religious and Secular parties to join a new government has just failed.

This joins other developments today that include:
- At least 3 previous “OK, they just signed a deal, it’s over” moments since the morning.
- The leaking of Netanyahu’s efforts to get the Labor opposition party to join in a unity government (and offered them LOTS despite their crushing loss in the elections - and they rejected him altogether).
- The official and insanely unexpected announcement that a right-wing party headed by one of Netanyahu’s opponents will be absorbed into the Likud, only for that to start falling apart when the Labor shenanigans became public. [Said party, Kulanu, ran on a platform of “keeping politics clean” and swore to not support a Netanyahu agreement if it were to turn out that he’s under investigation (he is). If they’re absorbed, it’ll almost surely cost the Likud votes, and if not, they’re 1000% toast in the potentially-imminent elections].

Who is Trump thinking he’s negotiating with? Israel doesn’t have a functioning government and if he thinks this is a lifeline to Bibi, he is even dumber than the bag of hammers son in law that he entrusts to do all of Trump’s heavy lifting.

This is a clusterfuck of epic proportions, and it’s bad even for Israeli politics, which has had its share of coalition governments and unity governments and shenanigans to avoid new elections. Bibi’s run out the string and the inability to form a new government means new elections will occur. Will it change the outcome/composition of the Knesset? I don’t have a clue. I don’t think anyone does. It just gives Bibi more time.

Prosecutors in Israel should stop hesitating to act (sound familiar?). Bibi’s precarious criminal jeopardy is putting Israeli security at risk even as Bibi frames his govt as the only thing protecting Israel from its enemies.

Who is Trump thinking he’s negotiating with? .

Actually that was supposed to have been straightforward; Since Netanyahu won the reelection and was the person tasked with building the new government coalition after the elections, then the previous Netanyahu government remained in power until the new one was to be sworn in. So he was 199% sure that the people he was negotiating with in Israel so far would be the same ones he’d still work with - and were it not for last minute shenanigans, he’d have been right.

re: #347 lawhawk

Oh, Trumpworld is 1000% tone-deaf. That’s nothing new really.
But here’s the thing - they couldn’t have predicted this.
They really couldn’t.
Because just about nobody in Israel saw this coming. And that’s including the guys who just MADE IT HAPPEN.
Less than 40 days ago, the very head of the party that’s effectively killed Netanyahu’s current government today went before the Israeli president in accordance with local election tradition, and gave him his recommendation as the head of his party for Bibi’s establishment of a new government.
Bibi had more than 65 representatives guaranteed. A narrow government at the worst-case scenario, with room for expansion later on, and with parties headed by close allies no less.
Hell’s bells, Avigdor Lieberman himself was his right-hand man since the 1990s!
Until maybe a couple of days ago, no one even remotely considered the possibility that this would happen. Last-minute political deals are common and everyone assumed that the latest developments were the ordinary theater. Even today - most assumed that they’ll sign an agreement at the last minute after Lieberman would get more of his demands. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard folks say “זה כולה הצגה, לא להתרגש” - “it’s just a show, calm down” in the past 24 hours.
Those folks definitely aren’t calm down now, that’s for sure.

In short: This sh*t on display now is LITERALLY unprecedented.

It’s just more of the ongoing implosion of the NRA. part of the back and forth legal quagmire surrounding the NRA’s finances and spending.
This should be clear as mud … lol (from Wikipedia)

In April 2019 the group unexpectedly sued its longtime public relations firm Ackerman McQueen, which was responsible for two decades of aggressive gun-rights advertising on behalf of the NRA. The lawsuit alleges that the firm refused to turn over financial records to support its billings to the NRA, which amounted to $40 million in 2017. The lawsuit questioned recent programming on NRATV, an online channel operated by Ackerman, which has taken political positions unrelated to the NRA’s traditional focus on gun-related issues. There were also concerns about possible conflicts of interest, such as the $1 million Ackerman pays annually to NRA president Oliver North.[45] Leading up to the NRA’s 2019 national convention in April, there were reports that North and LaPierre were at odds, with North demanding that LaPierre resign and LaPierre accusing North of extortion.[46] At the convention a letter was read from North, saying he had been told he would not be granted a second term as NRA president and adding that he intended to create a committee to investigate allegations of financial mismanagement.[47] A subsequent resolution to oust LaPierre over “highly suspect” financial practices was hotly debated for an hour before members voted not to discuss financial issues in public and to refer the resolution to the NRA board.[48]

Who has the authority to ask the appropriate Bar Association disbar Barr for his dishonesty and disgraceful conduct?

Just paged this, after reading a long and stomach-churning exploration of the “Incel” subculture and how they’re turning to plastic surgery to turn themselves into “Chads.”

So much about the pro-Trump movement starts to come into focus the more you look at incels. They were the force behind Gamergate, which then morphed into 4chan, took over Reddit, infests the comment threads of Breitbart, and is now fed into America’s info-stream via Fox News & Limbaugh.

This is pure poison. It is ugly, but we can no longer look away. The insecurity, rage, sense of wounded narcissism - this is the core of Trumpism.

And it’s winning.

A gym membership would probably be cheaper/safer than plastic surgery. It would also give them an opportunity to interact with real live human women. Of course, if they did do that, then they’d probably not be whiny little shits anymore

I just … how much of an angry loser do you have to be for this to make sense? In what world is all this not just an elaborate hoax?

And yet. There is a body count associated with these loons.

In forum posts, incels classify Chads by phenotype (“Keltic Nordid,” “Gracile Mediterranid”) and style (jock, lumberjack, vampire, pretty boy). They repost scientific research on the importance of symmetry and harmony in universal standards of beauty. They discuss the Golden Mask, a Platonic ideal of a face designed by a California surgeon using the ratio of phi.

Truth4lie’s preferred Chad was a common incel favorite: David Gandy, the face of Dolce & Gabbana’s Light Blue cologne ads, in which the British model has a bronzed six-pack, a plump Speedo, and crystal-blue eyes. (That Stefano Gabbana and Domenico Dolce are gay designers best known for an aesthetic of homoerotic high camp was an irony most incels missed.)

Which merely means “not enough evidence to convict”, not “you didn’t do it”. You can do the thing and still get a not guilty verdict.

Apparently, they do go to the gym (they call it “gymceling”) although who knows with these freaks.

Trying to wrap my head around this. Maybe it’s that they’ve lived so much of their lives online that they have no ability to interact in the real world? Are they all just aspies or on the spectrum? I know aspies & have family members on the spectrum, and they may be awkward in some social situations, but they’re not total assholes because of that.

What it comes down to is a combination of factors. It’s an inability to be introspective, either willfully (“I don’t want to know/admit what’s wrong with me”) or otherwise. It’s a lack of understanding of how human interactions work - and yes, many of them are or would be on the spectrum, though by no means all. (And being on the spectrum myself, I may add that the inverse relationship is also not a correlation - by far not all autistic men are incels.) It’s insecurities boiling up inside them from the extreme pressure put on men to Go Out And Get Laid as part of being a successful male, coming largely from popular media where the good guy always gets to do the hot chick in the end.

re: #411 Quoth the raven, Covfefe.

The one part I didn’t really cover was your last question. I think the concept of “Chad” is a combination of male porn star and male movie/TV action hero. I don’t think it’s necessarily overexposure to these media that are the problem, but lack of proper guidance of how to view oneself contrasted against those particular archetypes. In short - lack of a father figure with strong character to show them that they aren’t weak or inadequate just because they don’t fulfill the stereotypes.
